6063-T5 Explained: Why Wall Thickness Matters More

What does 6063-T5 actually mean?

The first digit is the alloy family. 6xxx alloys use magnesium and silicon as the main additions. That combination is heat-treatable: the metal gains strength through controlled heating and ageing, not through cold working alone. The 63 identifies one specific alloy inside that family. It is not a purity rating and not a quality grade.

T5 describes the heat treatment, not the metal. A T5 profile is quenched as it leaves the extrusion press, while still hot, then artificially aged in an oven. T6 adds a separate solution treatment and reaches higher strength. T5 is the normal supply condition for architectural profile because it happens inline, which keeps the profile straight, consistent and affordable.

One piece of general metallurgy is worth knowing, because it applies to every aluminium gate on the market and belongs to no single factory. Aluminium forms an oxide film the instant it meets air, and that film is self-limiting. It seals the surface instead of flaking off and exposing fresh metal underneath. That is why aluminium does not corrode the way mild steel does.

Why this alloy suits extruded gate profiles

6063 sits at the soft, easily extruded end of the 6xxx family. It flows at lower press pressure, holds fine detail, and tolerates thin walls and tight internal corners. For decorative gate sections — beads, chamfers, hollow rails — that matters more than raw strength.

A gate leaf carries its own weight and wind load, not a building, so 6063-T5 is comfortably strong enough. The failures people actually see in the field are coating breakdown, weld cracking and hardware pulling out of thin material. Not the alloy yielding.

We should be direct about what we do and do not do. We do not extrude our own profile. We buy primary 6063-T5 from Anhui Guangyin Aluminium, a state-owned brand, and from Jiangxi Huike. Our own six processes are cutting, welding, grinding, assembly, pre-treatment and spraying, with hand-applied gilding as a separate craft step. If a supplier tells you they control the metal from billet to gate, ask them to name their press.

Why the grade is the cheap part of the answer

Alloy and temper describe chemistry and heat treatment. They say nothing about geometry. Two gates can both be truthfully labelled 6063-T5 and contain very different amounts of metal, because the extrusion die decides how thick each wall is. That is the variable a supplier can reduce quietly without changing a single word of the specification.

Wall thickness is also where the gate's behaviour comes from. It decides what a hinge bolt bites into, how much material a lock case can be let into, and how far a wide leaf twists when you push one corner. A thin section photographs perfectly well and still feels wrong in the hand on day one.

Thickness of what, exactly?

A gate is not one thickness. The frame, the infill pickets, applied decorative elements and the posts are separate extrusions, and there is no reason for them to match. A supplier who answers "three millimetre" without naming a member has not answered the question.

Our confirmed figure is 3.0 mm on the gate frame. That is the frame. It is not a claim about fence panels, infill or decorative parts — those are different sections, and we are not going to stretch one number across the whole catalogue.

Here is everything we are prepared to state, next to what each number does not cover.

On durability we state 10–15 years without fading for the coating, and 30 years without corrosion or rust-through (that is the expected life of the alloy and the weld, not a record we have watched run out — the works dates to 2005) for the welded 6063-T5 structure. Those are our figures, given in writing. They are not a laboratory result, and we would rather say so than dress them up.

How to ask a supplier about wall thickness

Ask about the member, not the gate. "What is the wall thickness of the frame section?" is answerable. "Is it thick?" is not. Then ask the same question again for the infill and for the posts, because the answers will differ.

Ask for evidence that takes two minutes to produce: a photograph of a cut end with a caliper on it. Every factory has offcuts and a caliper. A supplier who will not photograph a cut section has told you something.

Then work outwards. Who extrudes the profile, and is it primary or remelted material? What is the coating film thickness in microns, which powder, and is that the specified range or a measured reading? Who issued the test report, and in which country? That last one matters more than most buyers expect. Our reports come from a Chinese third-party institution and we will send them. If your local approval process needs a report from a laboratory in your own market, plan for that separately — we cannot issue it.

Treat vague answers as answers. "High-grade thick aluminium" means the supplier either does not know the number or does not want to say it.

What wall thickness costs to ship

Thickness is mass, and mass is freight. On a single set to Europe or Australia, freight can run to roughly 60% of the goods value. That is the strongest practical argument for consolidating: we have no minimum order and will ship one piece, but we can also mix several series into one container, and that is usually where the money is saved.

For reference, custom pricing runs ¥800–2,000/m² for gates, ¥150–500/m² for railings and ¥1,500–5,000/m² for pavilions, at ¥7.2 to the US dollar. We quote EXW and DDP, and prefer EXW. Every box ships with the full screw set, so local trade installers can fit it; motors and locks are optional and cost extra. Simple CAD drawings usually come back the same day and quotations are free. Large or complex drawing packages need a design fee or a signed contract first.

On distribution: we will appoint one dealer per country, but only under a signed contract. In markets where no contract has been signed, the factory sells direct to end customers.

Ask for a number, name the member it applies to, and ask for a photo of the cut end. A supplier who gives you all three is selling you a gate; one who can only give you a grade is selling you a word.
